2021 APLD Awards Announced!

TLC Gardens Team is honored to announce that we are recipients of Two Silver 2021 APLD Awards! We are proud to present to you our latest Award-Winning projects:

Song Ranch (Silver Award, Specialty Projects – Featured at 1:44) consists of a private ranch home and a public Tai Chi studio on a sprawling 34,000sqft stretch of land. In 2019, TLC transformed this site to be a purposeful, unified journey through the native landscape with beautifully crafted features for a one-of-a-kind, therapeutic experience.

Söng Ranch is a historical homestead where the clients cultivate and harvest fresh food from their gardens. At the cedar arbor at the edge of the parking area begins a meandering journey through the outer garden at Söng Ranch. Carefully formed and planted berms frame the destination for arriving Tai Chi students, elegantly creating clear direction and flow toward the main patio.

The APLD judges commented, “the huge boulders and water trickling out of the rock add wonderful elements to the experience of doing Tai Chi in this space.”

The patio space outside the Tai Chi studio is defined by the shade shack, moon gate, and a grounding wall of boulders. The triangle of activity creates an intimate space for the clients and students to experience peaceful practice. The custom water feature mirrors the natural sound of the adjacent creek and adds soundscaping to the therapeutic experience. Oriented East-West to frame the rising and setting of the moon, the custom steel and cedar moon gate frames the studio space within.

We used the building blocks of the Tai Chi practice such as flow, balance, and path of lease resistance to inform the geometry, architecture, and overall cohesiveness of the outdoor spaces.

Mesa Fire (Silver Award, Details category featured at 1:18) created a timeless, inviting outdoor space for family and friends to come together. This 2017 Boulder residential project was the first design build we did with a team- truly a steppingstone in our growth as a company! It was also TLC’s first time using barnwood screens and fueled our passion for using repurposed materials in the landscape.

The fire pit is the central element at Mesa Fire. Our team built a smooth, custom sand finish concrete design. The level of attention to detail, creativity, and quality at Mesa Fire elevates the outdoor experience. As if this space wasn’t fun enough, we learned that you can see the circular pattern created by the stepping stones from satellite view!

Four years post-renovation, the space at Mesa Fire is looking great! The homeowners have been able to utilize the outdoor space as a safe haven to continue teaching classes throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Friends and neighbors often comment, “Wow! You have such a unique space out here!”

Mesa Fire is a functional, fun outdoor living space with everything the clients needed for their outdoor experience.

They later added a writer’s studio to the site where their daughter, Sarah Zerwin, wrote her first book in the writers studio, tucked away in the functional, creative backyard living space.

The exterior renovation at Mesa Fire created connected outdoor living spaces for the entire family to enjoy. The homeowners added a cozy writer’s studio where the book “Pointless” by Sarah Zerwin was born.
